Abstract.
MathXpert is software designed to help students learn algebra and
calculus. It contains a symbolic computation system capable of generating
step-by-step solutions to most (symbolic) textbook problems in those areas.
However, it does not merely exhibit these solutions. Instead, it uses its
computational abilities to assist the student to generate such step-by-step
solutions. The different ways in which it can assist the student include
giving "hints", showing the suggested next step, showing what operation
leads to that next step, or generating the entire solution. Graphical
support is also available - you are never more than one click from a relevant
graph.
